The Problem

Despite a growing public awareness of the importance of mental health, the lack of government assistance as well as the accessibility of mental and behavioral health continues to widen globally.
  • Approximately one billion people are affected by mental, neurological, and substance use disorders worldwide. A two hundred eight million increase from 2017. Mental health accounts for 10% of the global burden of disease and 25% of years lived with disability in 2019.
  • 1-in-7 (15%) people globally have one or more mental or substance use disorders.
  • Over 11.8 million deaths from substance use per year. Substance use accounts for 15% of health burden globally. Globally, suicide accounts for more than one in every 100 deaths. It is a major cause of death among young people.
  • Schizophrenia accounts for approximately 1 in 200 adults globally. People with schizophrenia or other severe mental health conditions die on average 10 to 20 years earlier than the general population, often of preventable physical diseases.
  • 14% of the world’s adolescents (aged 10–19 years) lived with a mental disorder
  • 1 in 100 children globally is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder
  • 49.8 million (7.5%) children aged under 5 years, 241.5 million (12.6%) children aged 5–19 years, and 291.3 million (11.3%) children younger than 20 years have mild-to-severe disabilities. Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia accounted for more than half of children with disabilities.
  • Despite the global prevalence of mental health disorder, ironically, resources for diagnosing, treating, and supporting people with mental and behavioral health issues remain extremely limited, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Behavioral health disorders remain widely under-reported across all countries, but particularly in lower-income countries.
  • 18 countries out of 24 for 2015–2017, less than 50% of people in need of treatment for opioid use disorders received it. Additionally, treatment coverage was under 10% in many countries. (World Health Statistics, 2022)
  • Thus, the necessity of a therapeutic modality is necessary for many low and middle-income countries not only for increasing accessibility of services to families in need but to help increase and promote better data collection of people with mental health disorder and their needs.

Beyond your Diagnosis (B.Y.D.) was created to provide solutions and bridge this gap.
